Web product, attracted the highest total citations to their
papers published in ISI-indexed Geosciences journals over the
last 10 years (January 1993-October 2003). These institutions
are the top 20 out of a pool of 338 institutions comprising
the top 1% ranked by total citation count in this field.

The top 20 Geosciences institutions are a blend of government
agencies and international institutions.
Leading the way is NASA, with 5,151 papers cited a total of 83,362
times to date. The most-cited papers for NASA in this field include
studies on the global distribution of a variety of compounds,
including volatile organics, aerosols, and ozone. Other highly cited
studies examine solar radiation, climate analyses, and terrestrial
ecosystems.
Close on NASA’s heels is NOAA, the National Oceanic &
Atmospheric Administration, with 4,082 papers cited a total of 68,532
times to date. NOAA’s highly cited work includes studies on global
sea-surface temperature, sea floor topography, glaciation cycles, and
climate.
Rounding out the top five are the National Center for Atmospheric
Research (2,484 papers with 49,231 total citations), the University of
Washington (2,562 papers with 46,985 total citations), and the US
Geological Survey (3,915 papers with 46,303 total citations).
The international contingent of the top 20 institutions enters at
#12 with the University of Cambridge. Geosciences ranks among the top
10 fields, in terms of total citations, in which the University of
Cambridge publishes, with 1,953 papers cited a total of 24,957 times
to date. Other international fixtures on the list include the Russian
Academy of Science (10,144 papers with 23,477 total citations),
Australian National University (1,597 papers with 20,773 total
citations), France’s CNRS (2,209 papers with 20,512 total
citations), the Geological Survey of Canada (2,088 papers with 20,263
