his
month, in-cites presents a listing of the top 20 institutions
which, as of the third bimonthly update of the ISI
Essential
Science Indicators
Web product, attracted the highest total citations to their
papers published in ISI-indexed journals of Chemistry over the last 10 years (January 1, 1994-June 30,
2004). These institutions are the top 20 out of a pool of 739 institutions comprising the top 1% ranked by total citation
count in this field.

The Chemistry category includes journals that cover a broad
spectrum of topics in the chemical sciences. Miscellaneous
and applied chemistry journals are also placed in this category.
spectroscopy
instrumentation
inorganic and nuclear chemistry
organic chemistry
physical chemistry
polymer science
food chemistry
chemical methods and structures
natural and laboratory syntheses
isolation and analysis of clinically significant molecules
medicinal chemistry
chemical engineering
The top 20 institutions in Chemistry are a blend of large
universities and government agencies from America, Europe, and Asia.
Leading the pack by over 14,000 citations is the University of
California, Berkeley, with 4,637 papers cited a total of 89,374 times
to date. Nanotechnology research is a prominent theme in this
institution’s record, most notably the work of Paul Alivisatos.

Japan rules the #2 and #3 slots with the University of Tokyo (7,565
papers cited a total of 74,682 times to date) and Kyoto University
(8,218 papers cited a total of 74,539 times to date), respectively.
Tokyo’s citation record includes highly cited papers on
ion-selective electrodes, while Kyoto’s highly cited work includes
research on photoinduced DNA cleavage. Other institutions from Japan
making this list are Osaka University (6,582 papers cited a total of
55,618 times to date), Tokyo Institute of Technology (6,845 papers
cited a total of 53,236 times to date), and Tohoku University (5,773
papers cited a total of 46,473 times to date).

Coming in at #4 is the Russian Academy of Science, with 27,633
papers cited a total of 71,170 times to date. This institution’s
most-cited paper in Chemistry is "Activation of C-H bonds by
metal complexes," (AE Shilov and GB Shul’pin, Chem. Rev.
97[8]: 2879-2932, Dec. 1997), with 409 citations to date.
MIT claims the #5 slot, with 3,236 papers cited a total of 67,488
times to date. Nanotechnology and copolymer research are among MIT’s
highly cited topics. ETH Zurich ranks at #6, with 3,924 papers cited a
total of 60,889 times to date. Like the University of Tokyo, ETH
Zurich also has highly cited papers on ion-selective electrodes.
Harvard University is ranked at #7, with 2,334 papers cited a total of
58,234 times to date. Among Harvard’s highly cited authors are
Charles Lieber and George
Whitesides.

France is represented by the Centre National de la Recherche
Scientifique (CNRS) at #8, with 6,732 papers cited a total of 58,119
times to date. Highly cited papers for the CNRS in this field include
such topics as hybrid molecular devices and using mass spectrometry to
link genomes and proteomes.
Caltech is ranked at #9, with 2,117 papers cited a total of 57,386
times to date. Highly cited papers for Caltech in this field cover a
variety of topics, including organometallics and metathesis catalysts.
Rounding out the top 10 is the University of Cambridge, with 4,589
papers cited a total of 57,308 times to date. Richard Friend is among
Cambridge’s highly cited authors in Chemistry for his group’s work
in conjugated polymers.
