The Most-Cited Institutions in Immunology

his month, in-cites presents a listing of the top 20 institutions which, as of the last bimonthly update of the ISI Essential Science Indicators Web product, attracted the highest total citations to their papers published in ISI-indexed journals of Immunology over the last 10 years (January 1992-October 2002). These institutions are the top 20 out of a pool of 226 institutions comprising the top 1% ranked by total citation count in this field.

The Immunology category incorporates journals containing:

cellular & molecular studies in immunology
clinical research in immunopathology
infectious diseases
autoimmunity and allergy
host-pathogen interactions in infectious disease
experimental therapeutic applications of immunomodulating agents

The top 20 institutions in Immunology are a blend of large universities, government agencies, international institutions, and the private sector.

The leader by well over 45,000 citations is Harvard University, with 3,650 papers cited a total of 125,760 times to date. The most-cited Immunology papers for Harvard span such diverse topics as the variety of helper T lymphocytes, autoimmune disorders, cloning receptors, and vaccine research.

Two divisions of the National Institutes of Health are next in the rankings: the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) with 2,048 papers cited a total of 79,803 times to date, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) with 1,910 papers cited a total of 63,055 times to date. Rounding out the top 5 are Stanford University with 1,274 papers cited a total of 48,658 times to date and the University of Texas with 2,195 papers cited a total of 46,797 times to date.

DNAX, an independent biotechnology firm located in Palo Alto, CA, ranks at #6 with 504 papers cited a total of 44,648 times to date.

Among non-US institutions, the Institut Pasteur in Paris has achieved distinction, ranking at #12 on the list. Immunology ranks among the top five fields in terms of total citations in which the Institut Pasteur publishes, with 2,153 papers cited a total of 36,760 times to date.
