The Most-Cited Institutions in Pharmacology & Toxicology,
1996-2006

This month, in-cites presents a listing of the top 20 institutions which, as of the fourth bimonthly update of Essential Science Indicators (January 1, 1996-August 31, 2006), attracted the highest total citations to their papers published in Thomson Scientific-indexed Pharmacology & Toxicology journals. These institutions are the top 20 out of a pool of 305 institutions comprising the top 1% ranked by total citation count in this field.

The Pharmacology & Toxicology field includes journals that cover the following topics:

  • pharmacology
  • pharmaceutics
  • cellular and molecular pharmacology
  • drug design and metabolism
  • mechanisms of drug action
  • drug delivery
  • natural products
  • xenobiotics
  • mechanisms of action for clinical therapeutics.
  • toxicology
    • molecular and cellular effects of harmful substances
    • environmental toxicology
    • occupational exposure
    • clinical toxicology

The top 20 institutions are a representation of academic and government institutions as well as private companies throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

Leading the pack is the University of Texas system, with 1,448 papers cited a total of 20,601 times to date. Their most-cited paper by far deals with the P450 superfamily. Other highly cited topics include mammalian adenylyl cyclases, estrogen carcinogenesis, and the toxicological role of quinones.

Merck & Company, Incorporated, is the first pharmaceutical firm on the list, ranking at #2 with 1,054 papers cited a total of 18,120 times to date. Four of Merck’s top 20 papers deal with cyclooxygenase-2 research, which is not surprising considering that Merck is the manufacturer of Vioxx.

The University of North Carolina ranks at #3, with 998 papers cited a total of 16,582 times to date. Three of UNC’s top 20 papers are included in a Research Front on methylated trivalent arsenic species. This Front currently ranks at #21 among Pharmacology & Toxicology Research Fronts.

The first of the three US government research agencies on this list, the National Cancer Institute, ranks at #4, with 836 papers cited a total of 16,349 times to date. One of NCI’s researchers, Dr. Joost Oppenheim, recently spoke with in-cites about his work. His most-cited paper is ranked at #2 on NCI’s list.

Ranking at #5 is Vanderbilt University, with 620 papers cited a total of 15,673 times to date. There are six other US universities in the top 20: the University of Michigan (#7), the University of California, San Francisco (#10), Harvard University (#13), the University of Washington (#14), the University of Arizona (#18), and the University of Kansas (#20).

New Zealand’s Adis International Ltd. ranks at #6, with 679 papers cited a total of 15,673 times to date. Several of Adis International’s researchers have been named as ISI Highly Cited Researchers in the field of Pharmacology & Toxicology.

Ranking at #8 is the Karolinska Institute, located in Sweden. The Karolinska Institute’s citation record in this field includes 800 papers cited a total of 13,526 times to date.

The US Environmental Protection Agency ranks at #9, with 891 papers cited a total of 13,435 times to date. The third and final US agency on this list is the National Institute of Environmental Health Science, ranking at #11 with 843 papers cited a total of 12,921 times to date.

The University of Tokyo ranks at #12, with 1,033 papers cited a total of 12,261 times to date. Topics being researched by the University of Tokyo include multidrug resistance, drug-drug interactions, and block copolymer micelles for drug delivery.

SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals (since 2000, a part of GlaxoSmithKline) is the second pharmaceutical company on this list, ranking at #15 with 461 papers cited a total of 10,697 times to date. The third and final pharmaceutical company on the list is Eli Lilly & Company, which ranks at #19 with 593 papers cited a total of 10,008 times to date.

Sweden’s University of Uppsala ranks at #16, with 796 papers cited a total of 10,571 times to date. The final international institution on our list is University College London, coming in at #17 with 490 papers cited a total of 10,049 times to date.End
