As of January 1, 2002, ISI Essential Science Indicators data were updated to cover a 10-year plus 10-month period, from January 1991 to October 31, 2001. With this update, the data pool expanded to include an additional 1,298 scientists; 207 institutions; 12 countries; and 24 journals that are either entirely new to ISI Essential Science Indicators, or new to one of the database’s 22 fields. In-cites identifies here those that broke into the charts with the highest number of citations.

Of the 1,298 new additions to the Scientists category of ISI Essential Science Indicators, the following 24 researchers have amassed the highest citation totals in each of the 22 fields covered by the database. Two researchers each in both the fields of Neuroscience & Behavior and Psychiatry/Psychology had identical citation totals. These 24 scientists are shown in the table below:
