As of September 1, 2001, Essential Science Indicators® data were updated to cover a 10-year plus 6-month period, January 1991-June 30, 2001. With this update, the data pool expanded to include an additional 1,173 scientists, 191 institutions, 26 journals, and 10 countries that are either entirely new to ESI, or new to one of ESI’s 22 fields. in-cites identifies here those with the highest number of citations. 

In the Scientists category, 22 researchers among the 1,173 additions to ESI floated to the top in terms of citations—one for each of ESI’s 22 fields. These new entrants are shown in the table below:

National Cheng Kung University and the Russian Academy of Sciences are tied for number of citations in the field of Computer Science.
