As of August 1, 2001, ISI® Essential Science Indicators® data were updated to cover a 10-year plus 4-month period, January 1991-April 30, 2001. With this update, the data pool expanded to include an additional 1,277 scientists, 271 countries, 33 journals, and 8 countries that are either entirely new to ESI, or new to one of ESI's 22 fields. in-cites identifies here those that broke into the charts with the highest number of citations.

In the Scientists category, 24 researchers among the 1,277 additions to ESI floated to the top in terms of citations. Both the field of Computer Science and that of Social Sciences show a tie for new researchers with the highest number of citations. These new entrants are shown in the table below:
