Between 1996 and 2000, ISI indexed 100,241 papers that each listed at least one author address in the People's Republic of China. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of materials science, followed by physics and mathematics. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper score for materials-sciences papers from researchers in China was 38% below the world average in (1.19 citations per paper for China, versus a world average of 1.92 citations per paper). While not yet reaching the world average in any of the fields shown, China's strongest showings were in agricultural sciences (9% below the world impact average), economics & business (-21%), and computer science (-27%).
