Between 1996 and 2000, ISI indexed 124,557 papers that listed at least one author address in Russia. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals categorized under the heading of physics. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper (impact) average for physics papers from Russia during 1996-2000 was 36% below the world impact figure in that field (2.16 citations per paper for Russia, versus a world figure of 3.37 cites per paper). In fact, in all the fields shown, the impact of Russian research registered below the world
average—although the nation showed comparative strength in physics, pharmacology, mathematics, engineering, and computer science.
