Between 1997 and 2001, ISI indexed 34,379 papers that listed at least one author
address in Finland. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the
heading of ecology/environmental sciences, followed by neurosciences and clinical medicine.
As the right-hand column indicates, the citations-per-paper average (or impact) for ecology
papers from Finland during the five-year period surpassed the world average by 23% (3.68
cites per paper for Finland, versus the world baseline of 3.00 cites per paper). Farther down
the list, Finland showed notable strength in clinical medicine (37% above the world average)
and agricultural sciences (+48%).
