Between 1998 and 2002, ISI indexed 121,318 papers that listed at least one author address in Russia. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals categorized under the heading of physics, followed by geosciences and space science. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper (impact) average for physics papers from Russia during 1998-2002 was 29% below the world impact figure in that field (2.58 citations per paper for Russia, versus a world figure of 3.64 cites per paper). While the impact of Russian research has yet to match the world average in any of the fields shown, performance was comparatively strong in pharmacology (96% of the world average, or just 4% below), mathematics (65% of the world average), and immunology (62% of the world mark).
