Between 1998 and 2002, ISI indexed 228,185 papers that listed at least one author address in France. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified in the field of mathematics, followed by space science and geosciences. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for mathematics papers from France was 5% above the world average for the field (1.43 cites per paper for France versus 1.36 for the world). France also scored well in a trio of physical-sciences fields atop the list (space science, geosciences, physics), and, farther down, notably strongly in agricultural sciences (23% above the world mark) and plant & animal sciences (+27%).
