Between 1999 and 2003, Thomson ISI indexed 233,501 papers that listed at least one author address in France. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified in the field of mathematics. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for mathematics papers from France was 9% above the world average for the field (1.44 cites per paper for France versus 1.32 for the world). France also scored well in the trio of physical-sciences fields atop the list: space science (10% above the world mark), geosciences (+21%), and physics (+14%). Farther down the list, the performance of French researchers was also notably strong in agricultural sciences (+25%) and plant & animal sciences (+26%).
