Between 2001 and 2005, Thomson Scientific indexed 209,531 papers that listed at least one author address in the People's Republic of China. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of materials science, followed by physics and chemistry. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper score for materials-science papers from researchers in China was 19% below the world average (or, in other words, at 81% of the world mark, with 1.80 citations per paper for China versus a world score of 2.30 cites). Although the citation impact of papers from researchers based in China has not yet reached the world average in any of the fields above, the country made comparatively strong showings in economics & business (just 14% below the world average), agricultural sciences (15% below) mathematics (-17%), engineering (-17%), and general social sciences (-17%).
