Between 2002 and 2006,
Thomson Scientific indexed 180,364 papers that listed at least one
author address in Italy. Of those papers, the highest percentage
appeared in journals classified under the heading of space science,
followed by mathematics and neurosciences & behavior. As the right-hand
column shows, the citations-per-paper average for space-science papers
from Italy was 14% above the world average in the field (8.62 cites per
paper for Italy versus the world mark of 7.53 cites per paper). The
nation also performed strongly in physics (25% above the world mark),
agricultural sciences (22% above), clinical medicine (+16%), and
computer science (+15%).
