The 20 Most-Cited Scientists in Clinical Medicine, 1995-2005

his month, in-cites presents a listing of the top 20 scientists who, as of the latest bimonthly update of the ISI Essential Science Indicators  Web product, attracted the highest total citations to their papers published in ISI-indexed journals of Clinical Medicine over the past 10 years. These names are the top 20 out of a pool of 14,101 scientists comprising the top 1% ranked by total citation count in this field.

Heading up this top 20 list is Dr. Meir Stampfer, with 376 papers cited a total of 30,739 times to date. Dr. Stampfer’s research interests are mainly focused on the etiology of chronic diseases, and his highly cited papers in Clinical Medicine provide ample evidence of this interest. His most-cited papers focus on the risk Dr. Walter Willett factors for cardiovascular disease, breast cancer2, and prostate cancer. Dr. Stampfer is Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology and the Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts.

Close on Dr. Stampfer’s heels is his colleague and collaborator, Dr. Walter Willett. Dr. Willett’s highly  cited work closely parallels that of Dr. Stampfer, and his record in Clinical Medicine includes 516 papers cited a total of 29,311 times to date. When we interviewed Dr. Willett for our Special Topic on Diabetes in June 2002, he was among the 25 most-cited scientists publishing on diabetes. Dr. Willett is the Frederick John Stare Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Bert Vogelstein ranks at #3, with 118 papers cited a total of 25,516 times in this field. Dr. Vogelstein’s main interest is in seeking the genes that cause colorectal cancer. Dr. Vogelstein is a Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University, as well as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Researcher.

One of Dr. Vogelstein’s colleagues ranks at #4: Dr. Kenneth Kinzler. Dr. Kinzler’s record in Bert Vogelstein of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Johns Hopkins University Oncology Center, Baltimore. Clinical Medicine includes 105 papers cited a total of 24,310 times to date. His work focuses on the biology and genetics of cancer, particularly gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Kinzler is a Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University.

The scientist ranked at #5 is Dr. Charles Hennekens, presently Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology, and Public Health at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Coral Gables, Florida. His most-known work deals with the role of aspirin in cardiovascular disease risk. His record in Clinical Medicine includes 243 papers cited a total of 23,791 times to date.

Dr. John C. ReedThe Burnham Institute’s Dr. John C. Reed ranks at #6, with 205 papers cited a total of 23,008 times to date. Dr. Reed’s research is centered on apoptosis, a fact that is reflected in his highly cited papers in our database. Dr. Reed is the President and CEO of the Burnham Institute, located in La Jolla, California.

Another researcher from the Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Graham Colditz, ranks at #7, with 391 papers cited a total of 22,086 times to date. When Dr. Graham Colditz we interviewed Dr. Colditz in August 2001, he was among the 20 most-cited researchers in our Special Topics analysis on breast cancer1. Dr. Colditz is associated with the Channing Laboratory at Harvard.

The Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Eric Topol is the #8 scientist on our list, with 498 papers cited a total of 21,050 times to date. Dr. Topol’s highly cited papers reflect his research interest in Dr. JoAnn Manson cardiovascular disease. Dr. Topol is the Provost at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and the Chief Academic Officer and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, as well as Professor of Medicine and Genetics at Case Western Reserve University.Paul M. Ridker

Dr. Robert Califf ranks at #9, with 490 papers cited a total of 20,776 times to date. Dr. Califf’s research interests include such aspects of cardiovascular disease as chronic coronary artery disease and heart failure. Dr. Califf is Professor of Medicine, the Director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute, and the Vice Chancellor for Clinical Research at Duke University.End
